I arrived in Melbourne, Australia in September of 2009 with a one-way ticket in one hand and a holiday working visa in the other. I didn’t know anyone, didn’t know where I was going or what I was doing there. I was just looking for a great adventure! When I first arrived at the airport I was one of those people looking frantically for someone holding up a sign with their name on it. I will never forget how relieved and welcoming it was to be greeted by Ian, the director of Resource Ed himself, and another Resource Ed teacher from London. Ian drove me right to my hostel in St Kilda and from that day continued to provide support, guidance and professional advice.

Describe your teaching experience in Australia?
My experience teaching with Resource Ed was one I will never forget. I was called almost every day to a variety of schools in Melbourne. Some schools required more travel time than others, but the transit system in Melbourne is fantastic. From my house at St Kilda beach I would tram to the main train station and then hop on a train to the outer suburbs of the city. The schools were always accommodating and happy to have teachers from different parts of the world. The great part about teaching in Australia is they work on the request system. This means schools will request you back and you have the chance to really get to know the students, staff members and school. For example, I was offered two teaching positions at one of the schools I taught at. Unfortunately due to travel plans I did not pursue these offers, but there were many options as a travelling teacher.
Did Resource Ed Australia's services meet your expectations?
I had an absolutely fantastic year teaching in Australia filled with memories and experiences that have made me a stronger teacher. I would not hesitate to go back and do it all over again! Thank you to Resource Ed and all the staff for your hard work and dedication to your overseas teachers.
Tips for Canadians?
Overall I would highly recommend joining a teaching service like Resource Ed. They help you find work every day and are more than accommodating to your schedule and travel plans.

Describe your teaching experience in Australia?
My teaching experience in Australia has been phenomenal. The students were all very helpful and excited to have a teacher from a different country.
What are you enjoying most about Australia?
I love the schools and the children especially. They are so eager to hear about Canada and also teach me about Australia too. I also love the weather! Melbourne always makes it interesting, four seasons in one day was really not a joke!

Did Resource Ed Australia's services meet your expectations?
Resource Ed has been absolutely wonderful. From the moment I arrived in Australia I was made to feel really welcome and needed. It was really wonderful after my first day of CRT to hear from Resource Ed asking how it had gone and if I had enjoyed myself. From the beginning to the end, Resource Ed has been a positive and fantastic company.
Tips for Canadians?
I would recommend: getting a mobile phone rather than a land line; bringing warm clothes along with summer clothes for teaching; downloading Skype and traveling as much as you can (the two-week breaks between each of the four terms are so helpful in that regard!).

Did Resource Ed Australia's services meet your expectations?
Resource Ed is the reason I am teaching at my school. I feel that they have provided me with what I wanted since I first arrived in Melbourne.
Tips for Canadians?
Soak up as much of the culture as you can (although avoid Vegemite at all costs). The Aussies are amazing and so welcoming to Canadians.

Describe your teaching experience in Australia?
I have had a fantastic experience teaching in Australia. I have extended my stay and will be working here for another year.

What are you enjoying most about Australia?
As a PE teacher I have had the opportunity to learn a variety of sports that we rarely play in Canada such as netball, cricket, lawn bowls, and Australian rules football. I am also really enjoying traveling so much.
Did Resource Ed Australia's services meet your expectations?
Resource Ed Australia has provided me with support above and beyond what I would expect for a teaching agency. The staff has always been extremely helpful and they have been able to assist us with many services such as orientation to Victorian schools, resources to use in the classroom, and finding potential contracts.
Tips for Canadians?
I would recommend that Canadian teachers bring more than $4000 dollars to get set up in the city and they should consider getting an Australian credit card to make travel plans and purchasing e-tickets easier.

Describe your student teaching experience in Australia?
As a PE teacher in a country where the mainstream sports are quite different from home, I have been able to familiarize myself with these games. I will take the foreign games and introduce them to my students back home to broaden their range of athletic education. The people are great, students love the accent, and it’s easy to have a great rapport with the kids.

What are you enjoying most about Australia?
A year teaching in Australia has given me the opportunity to increase the diversity of my teaching practice as well as mingle and educate myself on foreign culture. I have also enjoyed the tourism and social aspects of Australian nightlife.
Did Resource Ed Australia’s services meet your expectations?
Resource Ed Australia has continued to act professionally in all areas. They continually check in to make sure things are going ok. They provide a club that allows other Canadian teachers to meet up and become familiar with the city together. Resource Ed has made this adventure a lot easier and more convenient.
Tips for Canadians?
Get involved! I play on the Melbourne Ice Hockey team and have met so many people and it has allowed me to travel around the country.

Describe your student teaching experience in Australia?
My teaching experience in Australia has been extremely enjoyable and most beneficial so far. It’s a joy to work in an environment where we as teachers have control in our classroom enabling our students to be as creative as they can be and challenge them to their fullest potential.

What are you enjoy most about Australia?
Melbourne is a fantastic city! We've been enjoying the seemingly never ending list of things to do. The only negative thing I can think of is not having enough time to do and see everything.
Did Resource Ed Australia’s services meet your expectations?
Resource Ed has gone above and beyond when it comes to meeting my expectations. They have been extremely helpful and have always been quick when answering any questions I have had. I was most appreciative when an e-mail was sent from Resource Ed asking how my first day of work had gone. They also took the time to come by and visit the school to see how things were going.
Tips for Canadians?
It is an opportunity that most people should experience and embrace. If you feel as though you might become homesick, when deciding whether or not to come here to teach, Resource Ed has set up the Canadian Maple Leaf Club to make anyone’s transition away from home as easy as possible.
