On a 417 or 462 subclass visa, you are able to work for the entire twelve months, but for no longer than 6 months full time with any single employer. You only ever work on a casual basis with Resource Ed Personnel, so your work with as a relief teacher is unrestricted. Any contract obligation to a school should be for no more than 6 months. The visa application process can be completed online.

To work in Australian schools, teachers over the age of 30 need to be sponsored directly by a school or business employer under the provisions of a Business Sponsorship (subclass 457) visa. Some people in this category skilfully arrange timely web-interviews online, or avail themselves in person if they happen to be visiting as a tourist contemplating professional opportunities during their travels. Visit Department of Immigration and Citizenship for further advice.
Yes! Our Australian winter (mid - school year) is a great time to commence. Many of our vacancies occur in schools in the middle of the year due to unanticipated changes in staffing. Casual employment can be offered for periods of up to 30 consecutive school days, and short term contracts of 31+ days to six months are frequent. If your travel plans are a priority, rest assured that you can commence teaching with Resource Ed at any time of the school year that your schedule provides for. Many internationals who arrive mid-year secure contracts for the commencement of the following school year.
There are 2 ways in which to extend your stay in Australia on a 417 visa type
-
Prior to your 417 visa expiring, you must commence work in a regional town (picking fruit for example and not teaching) for a period of 88 days. Your current 417 visa must have more than 3 months remaining cannot be extinguished prior to the completion of the regional work.
Once completed you apply through IMMI with employer proof that you have completed the 88 days, IMMI will then extend your 417 for another one year for teaching. - The second option is via a school appointment and Business Sponsorship (subclass 457) visa. This is usually for a minimum of 3 months and up to four years. The most common scenario is for a school to appoint a known and preferred visiting teacher to an advertised vacancy of up to four years and is prepared to accept the responsibilities as an Employer Sponsorship for visa approval purposes. Teachers need to apply for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT). The application process is done online at the above web site. The link provides
- Form A the online document of registration
- Form A the Application Guide for registration
The application process can be a lengthy process however, reading the Guide and following the online application precisely will make the process quicker. We strongly recommend you commence the VIT registration at least 1-2 months prior to travel. Completing the VIT registration prior to coming to Victoria this will ensure you can work straight away. Use the TiM doc for further information and help.
Should I apply for VIT registration early even if I am only graduating from college this year and do not have my final transcripts?
VIT recommends that anyone about to complete their degree should still send all of the registration forms and other documentation to the Institute in readiness. Once you have received your final transcripts, a certified copy can be sent to the V.I.T. to add to your records for processing.
